Name: Dr J-P du Plessis
Qualification: MBChB (UCT), Dip PEC (SA), FC Orth (SA), MMed Orth (UCT)
Areas of specialty and interest: Shoulder and Elbow surgery – arthroscopic and open surgery.
I completed my Orthopaedic specialisation through the University of Cape Town and graduated with a Masters of medicine in orthopaedics in the same year. During my training I developed an interest in upper limb surgery and specifically shoulder and elbow pathology. I then completed an 18 month fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery through the Princess Alice orthopaedic unit in Cape Town. During this further specialisation under Dr Basil Vrettos and Steve Roche I developed skills in arthroscopic and open surgery for a wide range of shoulder and elbow problems.
I currently divide my time between Vincent Pallotti Hospital, the Sports Science Institute and the New Somerset Hospital where I am actively involved in the teaching and training of junior doctors. I also continue to be involved in research and attend regular meetings of the shoulder and elbow society.
